If they start with a count in click they are even better - like Tommy Igoe's track in Groove Essentials. The band would follow me and I was following them and the tempos would be all over the place!Īlso my bass drum work got lazy and inaccurate because I couldn't hear it and the recording's bass drum very well at the same time.Īnd I could miss something and not notice it because it was covered up by the drummer in the recording.ĭrumless tracks are better, but you're still having to key off the other musician's for tempo. Playing along with recordings has hurt me in some ways - when I finally started playing with a band I did what I did with the recordings and followed what I was hearing. You seem really keen to learn and im sure you'll succeed at what you want to do. its not a competition,(unless you enter one, in which case i guess it is in that setting),i dont think practise would be perfect even for seasoned pros. i remember on one of tommy igoe's dvds he talks about there being no "practise police". it takes time and patience but you'll get there. If any mental approach is holding you back, just know you can do it. you'll get to a point where you understand a styles "language" and will hear that most grooves are just different or new combinations of things you can already play. Gradually overtime you will hear more in the music as you study more drum concepts. try and listen for the style, the dynamics and the form of the tune so you can make those changes with the music even if you're choosing to play the same beat the entire song. later on you'll be able to write out all or some parts you want to spend time getting right when learning a new song.Ĭoncerning the actual playing: i would suggest trying to play whatever you can that lets you play along with the song the whole way and sounds appropriate when you're listening to the music and playing with it. early on a teacher helping you understand what you're hearing and doing it for you is helpful. In terms of playing along, transcribing can be useful. Watching live videos can help aswell, giving some visuals to what you're hearing. Spend some time everyday just listening to music, trying to feel/understand whatever bands/styles you're interested in.listen with no distractions. when you play along, listen to the music and listen to yourself and how those two fit together.listening as a big picture, rather than just yourself is really important. The biggest thing i think about is listening.
